In my work, images are born and grow on the surface, they create the skin. I thought about the function of the skin and the experience of the skin in between digital and material images. How can I play with? What is my interpretation of the skin?
The skin is the surface, the layer my eyes reach, and the matters my fingers can touch. It’s the outermost layer of the thing and the innermost layer of its surroundings. Skin can refer to a particular culture, race or group. In the digital world, skin is the graphic file used to change the appearance of a user’s screen for a program or game character. AI researchers created the open-source AI’s tactile sensing skill called ‘Reskin’. Here, skin is more like a choice of personal flavor, or shareable data for a self-supervised learning program.
I can see the skin as a pixel, data, as a trace of action, and in a timeline.
When I stood in front of Vermeer’s painting, the experience wasn’t just about seeing the image, it gave me a sense of presence. I believe it’s because when I was looking at the image, at the same time, I was seeing the surface of the painting that contains a substantial part of the Artist’s life.
